The Kitchen Cabinet Upfront

The move of the Kitchen Cabinet and Cafe to the beautiful new location at the front of Old Parliament House was celebrated at a cocktail party in Kings Hall on Tuesday 29 November.

When Janet Jeffs marked the occasion by launching a surprise Kitchen Cabinet 'Manifeasto', many guests asked for her notes, provided here:

We must eat so we must grow - mixing our sweat with the soil is the basis of a republican restaurant that would be:

• modest in all aspects.
• have are no waiters for the cooks serve the guests - and the guests might cook
  
• without choices on a menu created by season and grower
  
• help yourself to appetite portions from shared dishes 
• like a theatre - pay when you book or as you enter, a fair and fixed price that covers everything
• inspire an inclusive sense of conviviality.
• be local - supplied by local growers and much visited by people living nearby
• visitors welcomed by locals as their hosts
• cooks and helpers know the region
  
• food is grown by the cooks and farmers who come and cook too
  
• without advertising other than 'word of local mouth'
• without cult of personality or reviews, or artificial rating other than from its own growers, cooks, and diners
  
• with all seats in the house equally privileged.
